Setting goals – from process to progress

with No Comments

Last week (March 13-15, 2025) I was lucky enough to attend the AGOSCI conference in Adelaide, South Australia. I presented a paper about setting goals and pondering the question about goal banks. This has often been requested of ROCC and in the past I’ve decided against it. I felt that if we take away the thinking process that individualises our goals and strategies for individuals then there is less buy-in from those who are involved in the implementation, and it’s harder for people to modify strategies to suit the context and situation if they don’t fully understand the goals and why the strategies were selected.

This presentation is part of a process that will be built into ROCC later this year. Our team, along with amazing people who have contributed their thoughts and expertise (particularly Haylee Parfett), have thought a great deal about the process. We remain staunch advocates of teams shared understanding an individual’s current communication and the where they want to go. This particularly includes the individual to whatever extent that is possible. Better understanding how they autonomously communicate is an important first step in that process.

However, we have contemplated the key steps in the process of setting goals and considering strategies and hoping to automate the parts that we can within ROCC (based on the ROCC profile and comments during assessment) leaving individuals and teams time to focus on the important aspects that cannot be achieved without knowing the individual, their personality and their current and future communication requirements.

This presentation is the first introduction to what we are planning. Some of the documents are removed from the slides as they are still in the final stages of development and will be available soon. In this process, we encourage teams to spend a little more time in the planning to save time, or prevent wasted time in the implementation. We’d love to hear your thoughts. This presentation was only 20 minutes long so we have a lot more to share and hoping to organise some webinars in the coming months to discuss setting goals and strategies in more detail. Big thanks to my dog, Cookie, who posed for photos to include in the slides when Cyclone Alfred affected our internet connection at the crucial time of designing the slides.
