ROCC Unlocked : Moving Beyond the Score – Work that Pays You Back

You’ve learned ROCC, you can score ROCC… and now you want the part that makes the work pay you back: clear next steps, stronger team consistency, and real-world impact.

This 2-day implementation workshop is designed for schools and speech pathology practices who have completed ROCC Basic Training and have started using ROCC. We focus on moving beyond scoring to confidently using ROCC profiles and progress data to guide teaching, communication supports, and day-to-day decisions—so the whole team knows what to do next (and why).

Outcomes (by the end of the 2 days, participants will be able to)

Participants will be able to:

• Explain the purpose of ROCC as more than just an assessment, and how it informs classroom and therapy planning to support meaningful, real-world outcomes.
• Interpret ROCC profiles to identify skills vs accommodations, and use this to guide what to teach, what to support, and how to adjust partners and environments.
• Interpret ROCC progress graphs, describe what has changed over time, and use this information to identify next steps.
• Summarise ROCC profiles and progress in a way that is clear and shareable with others (colleagues, families, leadership, wider teams).
• Use Estimated Level of Communicative Competence (ELCC – Emergent / Transitional / Competent) to plan next steps for individuals and groups, including what progress looks like at each level.
• Use the new ROCC Communication Priority Triangle (alongside ELCC) to guide goal setting, prioritise targets, and decide practical “what next” actions for individuals or class groups.
• Prioritise and refine strategies so goals are not only data-driven, but also matched to the person’s autonomy, personality, and meaningful participation—using Domain 3: Initiation as a worked example.
