About this course
This course is an introduction to the ROCC (Roadmap of Communicative Competence) Assessment. We review it’s scoring descriptors and show you how to create data graphs and reports. The training includes a presentation style along with practice activities and examples.
The purpose of the ROCC Assessment and this basic training is to support a better understanding of people with communication challenges while giving direction to intervention and meaningful outcomes.
Please note: The course is available for 60 days from the start of course subscription.
Who is this course for
This course is required for those managing ROCC in their organisation, or approving assessments.
It is recommended for those using the ROCC and/or interested to learn more about the range of components that are considered important for communicative competence.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the ROCC as an assessment, planning and implementation tool for people with communication challenges.
- Understand why the ROCC was developed and the underlying principles for its design.
- Understand the basic user types within the ROCC online.
- Document the general assessment and communication information within the ROCC.
- Score the 10 key goal domains.
- Determine current level of communicative competence for an individual.
- Navigate the ROCC Online website.
- Generate graphs and understand basic information in relation to those graphs.
- Begin to use the ROCC to plan and implement communication change for individuals or groups.

About Janelle Sampson
Janelle Sampson created the ROCC after more than 28 years of experience as a Speech Pathologist with a focus on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). She is also the founder of Two Way Street in Adelaide and has worked extensively with families, schools and other organisations to support children and adults with complex communication needs. Janelle provides regular consultations and workshops around Australia for ROCC, PODD and many other areas related to supporting people with communication challenges.
